I saw Angels and Demons the movie today. A very good movie, just like the book. The movie director could capture the tension and thrill in the plot that made my adreline rushed. Salute!
The movie gave me a deeper meaning than the book (not that the book doesn't convey any meaning, but more like me not having the mind and knowledge to grasp it then). I was just a high school student with little spiritual knowledge when I read the book. Today I stand tall with a little more spiritual knowledge, so it was easier for me to grasp the message Dan Brown was trying to convey. from the book and now through the movie A line in the movie had a profound meaning, a line that hit me hard. It was spoken by the new carmalengo. "Religion is flawed, because men are flawed". How true! I'm not saying that the religion itself is bad. Of course not. Religion is good, it's meant to bring us closer to God. But the people in it, the institutionalization of religion is what makes it flawed. Believers, followers, are not encouraged to get to know God and to really know the essence. Instead, we are encouraged to perform such rituals, and by time, we will find ourselves just doing meaningless routine over and over again.
That line lead my mind to ask "if religion is flawed, then where do we turn to to get to know the essence of us all?" My beautiful boyfriend then answered "to life, to nature, to our surrounding, to ourselves, through observing and listening". Yes, that's right. Truth is out there, as well as inside of us. We just need to exercise ourselves to be more sensitive, and in touch with our inner self to be able to grasp God's messages. The truth. And because men are flawed, let God guide us to find truth.
There is another interesting message Dan Brown conveyed in the story. I didn't quite catch it, but my boyfriend did. Earth, air, fire, and water. These are the four elements we often hear. We always think that these elements are literally earth, air, fire, and wind. My boyfriend had a different insight. He said that that's not the case. The movie was trying to tell us that these four elements can also be thought as symbols. Symbols that lie within us. Earth is the symbol of what we do with our body, what we make of it. Air is the symbol of emotion. Fire is the symbol of . And water is the symbol of our mind, our thoughts. Now, these four elements are tied together with the fifth element. The movie went on about how there's a fifth element. And my boyfriend says that it is spirit. So, all the four elements are tied together with spirit. The drive that keeps us moving. Spirit symbolizes our actions. So, we can conclude that all the four elements manifest in the fifth, our actions. I was very surprised and awed with this view, but it made perfect sense to me.

But there's another important message Dan Brown is trying to convey. Angels and demons lie in all of us. We have the potential to be either one of them. It depends on which one we feed most. If we feed the angel in us, then our mind, emotion, and our drive will be angel-like, and in the end we will act with love. Our actions are full of love. But then again, a person with so much goodness in him/her can not be 100% fully angel-like. Because we are just human, flawed, and have the potential to be demon-like. There is always a possibility that the demon takes over, even for a short period of time. The same goes for people who we judge as evil. They may also have some goodness in him/herself. This is a gift from God. We should be grateful. There is always hope, for people can change. Don't rush to judge other people with a certain label, because they have the potential to be either one of them. And most importantly don't judge ourselves with a certain (negative) label, for we can change ourselves. We have a mind to decide which of the two we will cultivate most.
